Delos and Mykonos: free archaeological admission on 26–27 September

What happened

Admission to state-owned archaeological sites, museums and monuments managed by the Ministry of Culture will be free on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September 2026. The ministry announced the provision on 23 September for European Heritage Days. The celebration spans 25–27 September, but the general admission waiver covers the weekend, not all three days.

Locally, that brings the archaeological site and museum of Delos and the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos into the same weekend’s planning. The Mykonos museum’s own official visitor information also identifies the final September weekend as a free-admission occasion.

Why it matters

The two visits tell connected but different stories. The Mykonos museum holds finds from Rhenia, which served as the extensive burial ground of ancient Delos, alongside material from Mykonos itself. Seeing its collection can therefore add context to the remains across the water rather than merely fill time before a crossing.

Their timetables are not interchangeable. The Cyclades Ephorate’s dated schedule gives Delos 08:00–19:00 for 16–30 September, with last entry at 18:30. For the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos, it lists 09:00–16:00, matching the museum’s summer visitor page. These are the published operating hours, not an announced programme of guided tours.

Planning relevance

The waived archaeological admission does not establish a free boat crossing or a private guided tour. Check the outward and return sailings separately, and leave enough visiting time before last admission. The ministry’s provision should not be extended to every private museum or gallery on the island.
